10 Actions for a Slow and Sustainable Winter Life - Limitae

Living sustainably in winter is essential to limit the environmental impact of energy consumption, transportation and waste production.

Sustainable habits such as reducing water waste, supporting local and seasonal food production and being more aware when purchasing help preserve natural resources and protect ecosystems.

Here are 10 actions to reduce pollution and preserve a healthier planet for current and future generations.

1) Use public transport to pollute less.

If you have the possibility to travel by public transport (for example to go to work) it is an excellent way to reduce CO2 emissions.

2) Use multipurpose cups and dishes.

Not only when you are at home, but also at the bar. It often happens that for speed or for take-away they give disposable cutlery and dishes. There is no need to be ashamed to ask for the multipurpose when you have the possibility.

3) Heat your home just right.

Wishing to return to a warm environment in the evening is normal, but heating should also be optimized for sustainable winter living.

You can cover yourself at home and keep the temperature between 18 and 20 degrees: this way your bills will be lowered and the environment will also benefit.

4) Seasonal and local food.

Every season has its own delicacies! Everything is always available at the supermarket and you wouldn't say so, that's why it's important to become conscious consumers and get closer to what is the naturalness of things.

5) Use water wisely.

A very precious asset that must be preserved.

There are a thousand ways to save water at home, here are the two simplest: take quick showers (avoid bathtubs) and turn off the tap water when not in use.

6) Avoid chemical or gasoline-powered ice and snow removal products.

Water and salt are the two simplest and most immediate natural allies to use against ice and snow. If you need more specific products try to buy eco-friendly brands, to protect waterways and vegetation from pollution.

7) Cover up with sustainable jackets and clothes.

Dressing sustainably in winter means choosing clothing made from natural, organic or recycled materials such as wool, hemp or recycled polyester. It means choosing durable and timeless pieces that can be layered for warmth and versatility.

8) Be aware of what you are giving to the people you love.

Thoughtful gifts are the most beautiful, but also the ones that are long-lasting and sustainably produced! Avoid single-use or disposable items and support ethical and eco-friendly brands when you want to give a gift to someone.

9) Carpool to work or go skiing together!

If the workplace or destination is not directly reachable by public transport but there are other people who need to make the same journey, a car transfer can be organised.

10) Spend lots of time outdoors.

Enjoy winter sports like skiing, snowboarding, or ice skating to appreciate nature and minimize the energy expenditure associated with (almost all) indoor entertainment.
